JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Protecting credit unions’ interest with federal and state legislators and regulatory agencies is one of our priorities. We strive to build and preserve relationships with lawmakers and policymakers to ensure credit unions and their members are represented in the legislative and regulatory process.
This week, some members from our staff along with with other Missouri credit unions from the Heartland Credit Union Association took to the Hill in Jefferson City to discuss several legislative topics that affect our membership with our state representatives.
Credit union advocates met and shared the credit union difference with dozens of lawmakers and staff during the Capitol visits and Heartland Credit Union Association (HCUA) legislative reception and dinner on February 6.
The major focus of the visit was to inform and reinforce the important role that credit unions play in providing essential financial services for all Missourians. We met with the representatives from the districts that our branches and members reside. Along with sharing the credit union difference, we discussed a few pieces of legislations that could affect our members. These issues include:
- The First Time Homebuyer Saving Account Act
- Data Breaches and Fraud Protection
- Foreclosure Proceeds
- Clarification of Public Funds Deposits
“We appreciate all of the credit union leaders who braved the unpredictable weather to take part in Day in the Capitol and made their voices heard with our lawmakers,” said Amy McLard, HCUA Executive Director of Advocacy. “But the impact and effort continues long after this day. Even if you weren’t able to come to Day at the Capitol, we encourage you to reach out to your lawmakers and let them know that we are watching and care about their actions that could affect credit unions and the members we serve.”
