O’Fallon, MO — While West Community Credit Union branches were closed on Monday, October 13 in observance of Columbus Day, more than 110 employees came together to serve the community in a meaningful way. As part of CU Make a Difference Day, staff spent the day weaving Plarn Sleeping Mats, durable, waterproof mats made from recycled plastic grocery bags, to support temporarily unhoused individuals in partnership with AmeriCorps St. Louis.
Over the past two months, credit union members generously donated bags at all seven branch locations, demonstrating once again how West Community’s membership rallies behind community causes.

Using large 6-foot by 3-foot looms, reminiscent of childhood potholder crafts, employees wove mats that will be distributed by AmeriCorps St. Louis to individuals in need. These mats have proven useful in disaster relief, for the unhoused, and for those needing temporary sleeping arrangements.
“CU Make a Difference Day is a powerful reflection of our mission,” said Lori Hudson, Community Engagement Manager at West Community Credit Union. “Our members always show up with donations, and our employees show up with heart. It’s incredible to see what we can accomplish together when we focus on serving others.”
“These mats are more than just a comfort item, they are a symbol of care and hope,” stated Ann Hannan, Executive Director AmeriCorps St. Louis. “We’re grateful to West Community Credit Union for their partnership and commitment to helping those in need.”

This initiative is part of West Community Credit Union’s ongoing commitment to community support and outreach, a core pillar of its mission.
